The day I met Brenden Foster, I met an old soul in an 11 year old's body.

"I should be gone in a week or so," he said calmly. When I asked him what he thought were the best things in life, Brenden said, "Just having one." I didn't understand how this child, who was a year younger than my own son, could be so courageous facing death.

"It happens. It's natural," Brenden told me.

Three years ago, doctors diagnosed Brenden with leukemia. The boy who once rushed through homework so he could play outside found himself confined to a bed. But there was no confining his spirit.

"I had a great time. And until my time comes, I'm going to keep having a great time," he said.

Brenden's selfless dying wish was to help the homeless. "They're probably starving, so give'em a chance," he said, "food and water." But Brenden was too ill to feed them on his own. So volunteers from Emerald City Lights Bike Ride passed out some 200 sandwiches to the homeless in Seattle. Then Brenden's last wish took on a life of its own.

A TV station in Los Angeles held a food drive. School kids in Ohio collected cans. People in Pensacola, Florida gathered goods. And here in Western Washington, KOMO viewers from all over took part in the Stuff the Truck food drive in Brenden's honor. Hundreds with generous hearts donated six and a half huge truck loads of groceries and more than $60,000 in cash to benefit Northwest Harvest and Food Lifeline.

Brenden touched hearts all over the world. His wish came true, and he lived to see it.  "He had the joy of seeing all of the beautiful response to his last wish," said his grandmother, Patricia McMorrow. "It gives him great peace and he knows that his life has meaning." "He's left a legacy and he's only 11," said his mother, Wendy Foster. "He's done more than most people dream of doing just by making a wish."

Days before dying, Brenden surprised us with a sudden burst of energy. He wanted to get off the oxygen, hop out of bed and go buy a video game. Wise beyond his years, but still a kid. "I have been so blessed to have this child. A mother couldn't ask for a better son," Wendy said.

The B-Man, as his family called him, had one more wish before going: sprinkle wildflower seeds to save the bees. He had heard bees were in trouble. Someone answered B-Man's wish. A retired pilot asked his pilot and flight attendant friends to sprinkle wild flowers around the world, from Bali to Brazil, on Brenden's behalf.

When asked what made him sad, Brenden said, "When someone gives up." Brenden Foster never gave up. Even as he clung to his last hours of life, Brenden kept giving.

    [서울신문]　미국의 11세 소년이 살 날이 2주밖에 남지 않은 시점에 시작한 선행이 많은 사람들을 감화시켜 전국으로 번지고 있다고 ABC뉴스가 24일(현지시간) 보도했다.  

     화제의 주인공은 워싱턴주 보델에서 살다 지난 21일 세상을 떠난 브렌든 포스터로 그는 마지막 생의 불꽃을 태우던 2주 동안 여느 시한부 환자도 선뜻 생각하지 못하고 실행에 옮기지도 않았던 선행을 베풀었다. 

     지난해 12월 백혈병을 진단받고 어머니로부터 살 날이 얼마 남지 않았다는 말을 들은 포스터는 홈리스들에게 음식을 만들어 나눠주는 일을 한 뒤 세상을 떠나겠다고 결심했다.

　생전의 인터뷰에서 그는 "병원을 다녀오다 문득 홈리스들을 보면서 할 일이 있다는 것을 깨달았어요.그들에게 뭔가를 주어야만 한다고 생각했어요."라고 말했다.보통 이맘때 여느 아이들이 커다란 장난감이나 멋진 성탄휴가를 꿈꾸는데 시한부 인생을 통보받고도 이 소년은 자기 것을 내주어야 겠다고 결심한 것.

　그는 침대에 누워 옴짝달싹할 수 없는 처지였다.홈리스에게 음식을 주고 싶어도 움직일 수 없으니 딱한 일이었다. 그러나 집에서 그리 멀지 않은 시애틀 주민들이 이 어린 천사에 감화돼 음식들을 나르겠다고 달려왔다.ABC기자가 찾아간 날에도 15명 정도의 자원봉사자들이 홈리스들에게 전달할 샌드위치 200개를 만들고 있었다.

　지난 한 주 동안 이들의 선행에 감복한 이들이 로스앤젤레스와 플로리다주 펜사콜라,또 오하이오주의 한 학교에서도 홈리스들에게 음식을 제공하는 캠페인을 시작했다. 로스앤젤레스의 한 홈리스 구호단체에서 음식을 기다리던 홈리스는 "이 작은 소년이 보여준 것과 같은 용기있는 행동을 본 적 이 없다."며 "내 인생에 이런 일을 본 적도 없다.할 말을 잃게 한다"고 감동했다. 한때 친구들과 달리기 경주를 하면 앞지르기도 했던 포스터는 침대에서만 지내며 눈을 뜨기도 어려운 상태였지만 그 아이는 "지금은 주는 시즌이잖아요."라고 말했다.

　어머니 웬디는 "항상 남들의 좋은 면을 바라보고 돕고 싶어하는 아이였다." 고 돌아봤다. 아들은 눈을 감는 순간에도 "꿈을 좇으세요.어느 것도 어머니를 멈추게 해선 안되요." 라고 말했다.

    어머니한테 살 날이 멀지 않았다는 얘기를 들은 뒤 이 아이가 했던 말을 돌아보면 어쩜 이럴까 싶은 구석이 있다.  처음에 울음을 터뜨렸던 포스터는 이렇게 말했단다." 천국에 올라가면 하느님께 여쭤볼래요. 내가 앞으로 하고 싶어하는 일보다 훨씬 많은 것을 갖고 있어서 절 빨리 데려왔냐고요." 그 아이가 하고 싶어하는 일이란 바로 남을 돕고 남에게 도움이 되는 일이었다고 웬디는 돌아봤다.

　로스앤젤레스의 구호소에선 포스터의 뜻을 좇아 2500끼의 식사가 홈리스들에게 나눠지고 있다. 자원봉사자들이 전달하는 빵과 커피 등에는 '사랑해 브렌든' 이란 스티커가 붙어있다. 그는 갔지만 뜻은 남아 사람들을 움직이고 있다.  인터넷서울신문/ 임병선기자 bsnim@seoul.co.kr/
