믿음에 대한 부처님의 격언

Do not believe anything

Because it is said by an authority,

Or if it is said to come from angels,

Or from gods, or from an inspired source.

Believe it,

Only if you have explored it in your own heart

And mind and body and found it to be true.

Work out your own path,

Through diligence.

Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it. 

Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumored by many. 

Do not believe in anything simply because it is found written in your religious books. 
Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders. 

Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations. 
But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason 

And is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it and live up to it.

주님 붓다는 다음과 같이 말씀하셨다.

 

'우리는 언급된 어떤 것이 단순히 이야기되었다는 이유만으로 믿어서는 안된다: 또한 고대로부터 

우리에게 전달 되었다는 이유만으로 전통을 믿어서도 안된다: 소문 또한 그러하다: 현인들에 의해 쓰여진 글도 

단지 그들이 썼다는 이유만으로 믿어서는 안된다: 우리가 어떤 데바에 의해서 영감을 받았다고 생각되는 환상(심상)

들도 그러하다: 우리가 우연히 취하게 된 가정으로부터 유도된 추론들을 바탕으로 해서 믿어서도 안된다: 

유추해서 꼭 필요한 사항인 것 같다는 이유로도: 단순히 우리의 스승들이나 마스터들의 권위 때문에 믿어서도 안된다. 

우리는 쓰여진 글이나 가르침이나 말이 우리 자신의 이성과 의식에 의하여 확증될 때 믿어야만 한다.' 

'이를 위해서,' 그는 결론을 내리고 있다, '나를 너희들이 단순히 들었다고 해서 믿지 말고, 너희들이 너희들의 

의식으로부터 믿었을 때, 그때는, 그에 따라서 그리고 풍성하게 행하라 고 너희들에게 가르쳤다. [비교 3권, p.401]
